Description
Neurodivergence. More and more people are using the word. Some with a depth of knowledge and lived experience, but for many it’s relatively new and comes with snippets of understanding pieced together from a wide range of sources that vary in reliability and helpfulness.
This 3 hour training will provide a coherent and therapy-focussed dive into neurodivergence and what a neuro-affirming approach to counselling looks like. Suitable for people just starting to see more neurodivergent clients coming into their therapy room and wanting to give themselves a good basic grounding in this area.
Participants will learn about:
- Why there’s ‘an explosion’ of neurodivergence
- How different professions use varied language and approaches to people diagnosed as autistic or ADHD and what that means for clients
- The law and ethics to remain competent to work with neurodivergent people
- Sensory processing and why it’s vital to have some base knowledge to work with neurodivergent clients
- Differences in communication and information processing and what that means in the therapy room
- Overlaps and differences between some of the ‘diagnosed’ conditions and co-occurring conditions
Delivered by neurodivergent counsellors Kerry Berber and Clare Kingsbury of NeuroCompass.
Kerry (MBACP) is an integrative counsellor working in private practice with adults who are primarily neurodivergent. She is currently researching autism in the context of counselling at Bath Spa University, and is neurodivergent herself.
Clare (PNCPS Accr) works with children and young people as well as adults as an integrative counsellor in Weston-super-Mare. She also delivers more ADHD-specific workshops for counsellors, clients and parents.
